St Paul's Catholic Primary School
External lighting using Ansell bollards, lamp posts and wall lights at a school in Thames Ditton, Surrey.

The brief
Paths parents could not see.
The background to the job is the school had had a couple of reports of parent finding it hard to see the paths and playing field during school drop off and pick up times as the evenings got darker. Many were using the torch on their phones to see a route. The paths have tall fences and bushes on the outside, this makes things look darker during the dusk period.
Redwood Electrical UK Ltd were tasked by the school to come up with a lighting design to make the area much better lit and safer for the children, parents, teachers and governors.
The design
Designed with Ansell.

We consulted our preferred electrical Wholesaler, Wilsons who recommend Ansell. We have used Ansell products before.
We met with Ansell and the school's Business Manager to discuss the lighting and any concerns she might have with regards to their neighbours. Ansell took away a set of plans of the school and the grounds and presented it to the Ansell lighting design team. They came up with a comprehensive lighting design, with pictures of the fittings as well as pictorial mock ups of how the lights would look when lit.
St Pauls Catholic Primary school is next to the modern Catholic Church in Thames Ditton, on the main Hampton Court Way, separated from the road by a tall laurel hedge. The other three sides of the school back on to a residential area and the gardens of large houses, so keeping light pollution to a minimum was key.
The job
What we fitted

01
44 wall packs
The 44 black Ansell Wall Pack LED was used on all the external walls of the school, where entry / exit doors are located the Emergency variants were used. All the lights were set to 4000k. These were chosen to give a good spread of light on the paths, steps and playground areas.

02
5 lamp posts on the service road
The 5 black Ansell AHPT/1LED post top lights were mounted on 5m Kingfisher lamp posts, painted black. These were fitted down the school service road, from the school main gate to the pedestrian access gate to the reception. We wanted a good spread of light on the service road and path for pedestrian access and for the teachers as they walk down the service road to their cars. The lights were set to 4000k and max power output.

03
3 lamp posts by the Junior Playground
The 3 Ansell AWolf SG 18-30w lights with Wolf post top brackets were mounted on 4m Kingfisher lamp posts, painted black by the gate in the rear Junior Playground. These lights were chosen in order to direct the light away from the houses but illuminate the entry gate area and a portion of the playground. These lights were set to 4000k and 21w (mid setting)

04
24 bollards along the paths
20 Ansell Avio bollards have been installed on the perimeter path from the main gate to the new class room building. On the fence between the church and the school is a muster meeting point. We will be fitting 4 of the bollards with Emergency packs to guide people to this point. A further 4 Ansell Avio bollards have been installed from the pedestrian side gate to reception, along the reception path. 2 of these bollards will be fitted with Emergency packs to guide people to the muster point. All the bollards were set to 4000k and max wattage. The bollards were chosen to give good low level light along the path, and placed evenly leading to the reflection garden in the corner and then on to the main gate. They were also specified in black so that they would blend into the background.
Day to day
When the lights are on
The lights are only operated in the early mornings for breakfast clubs and dusk until approx 7pm due to after school clubs. The only other time they will be used later in the evening is on parent / teacher evenings and the receptionist has an override switch for each of the 4 areas of lights.
Switch on
Ready before Christmas
We managed to switch the bollards and lamp posts on 2 days before the Christmas break, enabling the staff, parents and children the experience of what the future would hold in terms of external lighting of the school. We wired and installed the final wall pack on the 21st of December, ready for the New Year.
“What everyone has been impressed with is that the final switch on looked exactly like the mock ups of the lighting design (the last pages of the design). We were very impressed with the whole process and how the lights looked. This was our first large lighting design job working with companies at a different level that we had experienced before and it was worth it for how it turned out.”
